Accelerating engagement through an intuitive vehicle safety platform

Inlight partnered with TAC to redesign "How Safe Is Your Car," creating a user-first experience with real-time safety data, driving a 90% increase in return visits and winning the 2022 Good Design Award for Digital Website and Development.

Challenge

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) “How Safe Is Your Car” digital service platform was hard to navigate and slow to update. This made it difficult for Victorians to access crucial safety data and limited the platform's potential impact.

Solution

We developed an intuitive, adaptable tool designed around real user needs, making it easy for anyone to find clear, personalised vehicle safety information.

  • User-centred design
Insights from user research shaped every feature, making car safety information easy to find and understand.
  • Composable architecture
Separating the Craft content management system from core systems means quicker updates and smooth integration of complex safety logic.
  • Fast, relevant search
Algolia search helps users quickly find the safety information they need.
  • Real-time safety data
Multiple external APIs ensure safety ratings and features are accurate and reliable.

Impact

The redesign furthers TAC’s commitment to safer roads by helping users make more informed decisions. These improvements encouraged higher engagement and earned recognition within the industry, reflecting the value created for both users and the TAC team.

A website interface is displayed on a mobile screen, showcasing a car safety search tool branded “TAC.” The design is bright with a yellow background and a bold heading that reads, “howsafeisyourcar?” Users can search for car safety ratings by entering a make or model, or by number plate. There is a slider to set a budget range from $2,500 to $60,000+, and options to choose preferred car body types—All types, Hatch & Small Cars, Sedans & Wagons, or SUVs & 4WDs. Clean icons and friendly visuals make the tool easy to use and approachable for all audiences.
A digital interface displays the 2025 BYD Shark 6, a blue utility vehicle, alongside an ANCAP safety rating of five stars. Safety scores for different categories are listed, including Active Safety Assist (86%), Adult Occupant Protection (85%), Child Occupant Protection (87%), and Vulnerable Road User Protection (74%).
A family is unloading items from the back of a blue SUV. An adult hands a backpack to a teenager, while a child holding a basketball stands by the car. The scene suggests a family outing or after-school activity.
The design of the site has been beautifully executed and delivers on its core function - to educate consumers about recommended safety features of their car.
